Name TAKAYAMA Hiroshi TAKAYAMA Hiroshi
Position Professor
Subject Introduction to Visual Culture
Research Themes European visual culture in general; history of visual culture from the 17th to the 19th century—the supposed origin of today’s subcultures; Japan in the theory of image
Message Do you know anything about Mannerism, or the Baroque? Or anything about the Picturesque?
Anything about representational approaches to a culture?
All of these are keys for deeper understanding of those periods in the cultural history of Japan (1760s~1830s; 1880s~1930s) in which Japanese culture somehow came closest to the contemporary European cultures. A comparatist, interdisciplinary, and synthetic approach will be tentatively presented and discussed.
I had been a student of English literature for almost 30 years, but now I’m a specialist in everything (that is, in nothing!), known among my colleagues and students for widest interest in everything eccentric and wonderful. Yes, ”wonder” is my pet word.
