About Meiji Univ

Meiji university international strategy

School of Business Administration

At the School of Business Administration our aim is to educate individuals with a global outlook. In order to achieve this, we have introduced a specialized, short-term English study program, the International Business Program (IBP), and we have concluded several student exchange agreements with undergraduate schools in universities in other countries. By sending our students abroad and accepting foreign exchange students here, we are proceeding rapidly in our quest to create a more international school.

Our specialized study abroad system allows students the chance to hone their business English skills

The International Business Program (IBP) is a short-term study abroad program for one of the practical subjects of The School of Business Administration. IBP started as a foreign language training course in 2002, and over 300 students have participated since then. The 2010 program will be carried out in the U.S.A. (Portland, Oregon), and Australia (Queensland). IBP gives students the opportunity to visit local corporations and to attend classes on the business course at the university. Hence, one of the characteristics of IBP is to learn about business or management in addition to studying English intensively. All students stay in local homes during the program so that students can experience the local lifestyle, culture and customs and to promote international exchange at grass roots level.

From 2010, students successfully completing the IBP will receive credits as with their regular classes. IBP will be a good opportunity for students to improve international understanding, and it will be a step towards longer study abroad courses.

Expanding agreements with our partner institutions

So far we have concluded partnership agreements with four undergraduate schools in universities outside of Japan. These are the Faculty of Business at the University of Victoria in Canada which is well known for its enormous picturesque campus; the Business School at the University of South Australia in Adelaide which has a student body of 36,000 across its five campuses; the ESCEM School of Business; Management in Tours which is one of France’s prestigious Grandes Écoles; and the Business School at the Seoul National University which is one of Korea’s prestigious universities.

In addition, our school and two Russian universities, the School of Marketing of the National Business Administration University and the Plekhanov Russian Academy of Economics, have agreed to the academic exchange of undergraduate students under the inter-university agreements thus broadening the gateways to studying abroad.
The characteristics of these international academic exchange programs are as follows:

  1. Many opportunities are provided for undergraduate students to study abroad.
  2. Business courses are provided in English at the universities.
  3. Enrollment in seminars of Meiji University is possible under the direction of the faculty.
  4. Tuition is paid to Meiji University.
(In accordance with the University’s student exchange system rules, students only need to pay the Meiji University tuition fees and we are also planning to offer students financial assistance.)
  5. Incoming students can take classes offered in English so fluency in Japanese is not required.

Subjects in English

There are several subjects taught in English. For example, “Strategic Analysis of Japanese Companies A-B” and an omnibus style along with “Special Lectures on Business B” by business people who are invited as guest lecturers.

On average around 50-60 students took each subject, showing that there was a strong demand for such subjects. In addition to this, international students are studying at more than 10 seminar courses provided in English. We plan to increase the number of English seminars in the near future.

The aims of providing more subjects taught in English are as follows:

  1. to improve the English of students at the School of Business Administration
  2. to offer a wide selection of subjects to international students and offer more learning opportunities
  3. to increase the number of international students and create a campus environment where English is used in daily life
  4. to educate students who can survive and thrive in the global society.

By increasing the amount of subjects taught in English and by increasing the number of international students we believe we are offering our students the chance to become successful globally.

In order to guarantee that our degrees are of an international standard, we are actively working on exchanges with universities throughout the world and doing our utmost to ensure that our curricula are improved. These efforts are essential to our development as an internationally competitive school.
